A personal watercraft (PWC), also called water scooter, is a primarily recreational watercraft that is designed to hold only a small number of occupants, who sit or stand on top of the craft, not within the craft as in a boat.
Prominent brands of PWCs include Jet Skis and Sea-Doos.
PWCs have two style categories. The first and the most popular is a compact runabout, typically holding no more than two or three people, who mainly sit on top of the watercraft as one does when riding a motorcycle or quadbike.
The United States Coast Guard defines a personal watercraft, amongst other criteria, as a jet-drive boat less than 12 feet (3.7 m) long. [2] There are many larger “jetboats” not classed as PWCs, some more than 40 feet (12 m) long.
At rest, it resembles a sit-down jet ski. Gaining speed, it would eventually lift up on the skis, and plane. The directional control was by turning the handlebars, not rotating the hydrojet like for the jet ski. Originally, the Wetbike was powered by a Suzuki two-stroke engine.[2] During the latter years of Wetbikes (late 1980s) there were considerable advances such as 60 hp Suzuki 800 cc engines, and the Metton hulls, which were much lighter than previous models. [1][2]
Eventually the Wetbike gave way to the new personal water craft (PWC) such as the Yamaha Wave Runner, mainly because they are much easier to ride.[1] They were last produced in 1992.[2] The design was later sold to Kawasaki.
